National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month® and what better month to start a nutrition blog?  The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has challenged nutrition bloggers to write about what the National Nutrition Month theme means to them.  This year's theme is "Get Your Plate in Shape."  For me and other nutrition professionals, it is a tool to help others and motivate them to really take a look at what they are putting on their plate and what type of impact it has on their health.  It breaks things down further than "one day at a time" and instead, has us focus on the moment, the plate that is in front of us.  How are your portions?  Are you making healthy selections from each food group?  Are you eating a variety of foods at each meal?  Is half of your plate comprised of fruits and vegetables?  Questions to ponder...and to perhaps use as a basis for goal-setting if you are so inclined.  Of course, not every meal will work out this way but why not try to really take a look at one of your meals each day to see how you might be able to improve it?  My challenge to you is to pick up one fruit or vegetable from the supermarket that you've either never tried or that you haven't eaten in a long time.  Mix it up a bit!  Variety helps us meet more of our nutritional needs and keeps us from getting bored.
